National Citizen Service

National Citizen Service programme for Year 11

National Citizen Service (NCS), the UK’s flagship youth programme for 16 and 17 year olds, has awarded ‘Champion School’ status to 345 schools across England. The status has been given to those institutions who have excelled in promoting the programme and recruiting young people to take part over the last academic year. We are extremely proud to be a National Citizen Service Champion School, having been given the Bronze Award for our uptake in the 2016-17 school year, and the Gold award in 2017-18. We would like to continue this by increasing the number of students participating in this amazing experience by encouraging our students to sign up and take part.  Whilst the COVID-19 pandemic has put the NCS programme on hold for Summer 2020, the plan is to get it up and running again as soon as government guidance allows.

NCS are regular visitors to Bassingbourn, with assemblies, lunchtime stands and PSHE sessions. Their goal is to get as many people as possible involved in is a unique, nationwide, part-residential programme aimed at helping 16- and 17-year olds to get active, involved, and make a real difference in the local community. Taking place over 4 weeks in the summer holidays, the programme will give young people the opportunity to build a variety of skills for work and life whilst taking on new challenges and adventures, making new friends, and contributing to the local area.

  • Week 1: An action-packed 5-day trip to at an outdoor activities centre (think paddleboarding, rafting, rock climbing, and much more!).
  • Week 2: A 5-day residential stay at a University, during which the young people will take part in interactive workshops with local companies and organizations, developing a range of skills that are appealing to employers and universities.
  • Weeks 3 & 4: The young people will put all of their new skills into practice by planning and delivering a social action project in the local community.
